Having Fun..making socks!

Seems like lately, I have been on a knitting trend. I think only because the chill has come in, and we have an ARCTIC Blast here in Los Angeles! Can you believe it is cold here? Well, we're getting in lots of rain over the last few days, and there is several feet of snow in Big Bear and the mountains over looking the Valleys....

One of the funniest videos I got in an email from Interweave...it is a SOCK video!

Easiest smallest Socks to knit!

I am so hooked...on these teeny little socks!

I got the pattern after browsing through the internet, and found this cute little keychain kit! You only get the instructions and the wooded blocker with key chain, but it is so cute!

I decided to knit these, and they only take about 2 hours, at the most!

First, I didn't have size 0 needles, so I used Size 1

And this sock yarn, I bought at the fair. I loved the green color, and the colors varigated throughout, but of course in a project this small, you barely see any variation in colors!

This one is the second sock that I am knitting.

It is so cute. I just knitted the ribbing(k1p1), for 4 rows, and now I am doing the length of the sock...

Isn't the yarn pretty?

I love it....so this sock you can see the yellow, and white....and green

Whereas, this sock, there is very little difference in colors, of just Green and white. You can see a little bit of orange at the toe.

But, you can see that this is barely 2 inches long and 2 1/2" high!

Now it is next to the block
Voila! it is done, and see, next to my little scissors..I guess it doesn't give you much proportion....
Does anyone read my blog? I don't know, but it is so cute..I will share where I got this!
This pattern was from Debbie Jennings...
too cute! and very easy!

Bureau of Missing Socks

Knitting socks

wwwwell...this is like missing the other side, except I do know where the other side is....

it hasn't been knitted yet. BUT..one side is done!

I found this website

it is called The Bureau of Missing Socks

The Bureau of Missing Socks is the first organization solely devoted to solving the question of what happens to missing single socks. It explores all aspects of the phenomena including the occult, conspiracy theories, and extraterrestrial.
We offer support for the matching sock deprived, and catalog, research, index and document all extant material related to socks since the dawn of the shoe. Our audio visual department is the largest multi media center in Hollywood and several sock themed feature films, television shows, and interactive CDs are in development.
We are entirely funded by your tax dollars expedited by matching cuts in the defense, welfare, and education budgets.

We've all been victims of this heinous societal menace, the disappearing sock. Now there's help, not only to aid in locating your missing footwear, but also in computer mating your single sock with some other poor, lonely single sock. Touching, and it's all done without Chuck Woolery.
You can even enter a sock pyramid scheme, promising 150,000 single socks delivered to your mailbox in only 30 days!

Stitches in Time

It is a small quaint store in Bellflower, CA. I has a wide variety of yarns, from sock yarns to novelty yarns, and acrylics and wools.
She's got a great couch, to sit and knit, and she also has great instruction classes too!
I love the walls of yarn all over, and she has wonderful samples throughout the store.
It is in a cute old town feel area of Bellflower, just a skip from Long Beach, and Cerritos and Lakewood. There is a Starbucks nearby, as well as Subway, and you can also eat good Southern Fried cooking from Johnny Reb's which is near by...
Also nearby is a great scrapbooking store....
You'll want to check out this area!
oooh, and I almost forgot...there is a cool little pirate park in the shopping area, with a cool fountain near by....there is a Pirate ship, and cave, with a fortress for the kids to climb around...

New Sock yarn...

While reading one of my favorite blogs....good to be girl I came across one of her entries that had a link to.....
http://knitterlythings.com/ She got a sock kit with 4 skeins of beautiful dyed sock yarn...really cool...Now I just really need to get over my sock phobia and knit....

I really want to get into socks. I think that it would be cool to be knitting socks and experiementing with dying. I did see that I can get knitted yarn and dye it, and then unravel it for my own socks.....

hmm....

one more thing to add....after making only 8 to 10 leis, I might be going into a small business making them...It was a huge hit for the ones who were in college. Apparently, as the girls who graduated was walking on the stage, and off the stage, they were approached by several people who were in the audience, as well as fellow graduates, that wanted them....she could've sold them off her neck, and they were willing to pay 25.00 to 30.00 each! Not bad, eh? I might be making a slew of them for some of the local college graduations!!!! What a way to get through the June Gloom!

See? I really knit!

My friend Karen and I started to make socks. I don't know how far Karen is, but I am almost at the toe..I think for my first sock I am doing 'ok'. Well, it is ok for me...I think once I get the hang of it, I can do it quicker. I have to go back in and get 'lessons' for the toe. And then start the other side..unless I can find a friend with only 1 foot...

I love the details of the colors in the yarn, and I do want to get more of this lovely yarn...by Happy Feet.

This is another project I am doing. I found that I needed to have a small 'something' to hold my cell phone and DL in, but not necessarily money. So, I am going to knit a small pouch, and then felt it. I had this Caron ball of yarn, of felting yarn. (SO, I don't have to use my more $$ yarn!)..can you see using a 20.00 ball of yarn from Wales when I can use this 4.00 ball to do the same thing??

this was done with a combination of yarns..can't remember what..but, they were from Michaels...so it was cheap...

no pattern involved, just knitted and made into a basket with a i cord handle and fun fur knitted into the top 3 rounds.

This was done using cheap cotton yarn from WALMART...made into a shrug and a hat (I ran out of the first dye lot, and had to get another one, but it was more paler). The hat was done with the paler yarn. It is cute though....! I think the color was called PINK LEMONADE

What a week...trials and tribulations

I have had a rain cloud over my head....I don't know why, but it makes me wonder what is going on..........From last week with my water heater to my daughter having a reaction to a shot she got at the Dr's and then having chest xrays...and now on medication to... this last Friday, the electricity went out of my house, but fortunately God (or someone) woke me up at 4 am to let me know that this was happening, otherwise I would've woken up late for work....

I went out in my shabby shirt, (pulled on pants) and zoris and went outside to check the breaker box with a tiny flashlight. I pulled all the breakers twice and then twice again, to no avail...only electricity in 1/2 of the house....I am getting frantic..thinking that this is some scary movie that the lady goes outside her house and gets attacked by "Freddy the 13th" ..or "Jason's Nightmare on 46th Street" or something...lol All I can think is that $$$ are going out the window when I get home from work...and I have to call an electrician....(and then my boss tells about some guy in our area who went under his house and got electrocuted, and the firemen had to make a huge hole in the floor to get him out, but he was dead --YEAH, like that REASSURES ME!!!)

Later, after getting back home from work, I find that all is well, electricity is working and the neighbor tells me that the transformer was only 1/2 out..hence, only 1/2 the homes had 1/2 power...so, I thought it was only me, but no, it was several of my neighbors...

Then, today, I go to my car to get to the doctor's appointment that I have, to find that I have a severely flat tire. FLAT...the good thing? Well, it could've been yesterday when we were in COMPTON/WATTS area for a basketball game (for those of you who don't know the area, it is gang territory, crack heads etc..., where you don't want to be at all in a desperate situation)...so, I am thankful that I had an Angel watching over so that we didn't get a flat while we were there!

So....I guess I am happy that I can see the rainbow through my cloud...One of my Bible verses came to mind, and it was Hebrews 12: 2 to persevere and go beyond our sins, and run the race...Keeping my focus on Him....

The good thing is, I wasn't the person that got their truck towed away on our street today...Now, they really had a bad day!

Kokeshi....and knitting???

The closest I have been to Japan....ha ha..it is Orlando...

http://mylittlemochi.typepad.com/my_little_mochi/2008/03/baby-kokeshi-do.html

SEARCHING Blogs...well, I have a few favorites..but one of the links that I visited, had a link to this, and of course, being Japanese, I couldn't resist...I need to make some of these...so, I will go to the store, and get a few things..and post my photos soon...

Don't know what a Kokeshi doll is? This will tell you more about the Traditional Kokeshi dolls...I have a few in my house...

Daruma dolls.
I have a couple of these. I got them from my Grandmother's house. I don't know what happened to some of the other ones. I think my cousins got them. These were from Orlando. They had them in a table, and it was so colorful, I had to look at it from the artistic side of me. The plaque (above) was with it, and it explains what Darumas were. VERY Interesting...?

these toys bring back memories....there were in a collection at Disney World in Orlando.

Graduation Lei

The whole class of 2006

This is what my daughter's looked like from her Middle School Graduation. Tori and her Grandpa

I am finishing up another one for a school that has Blue and Gold as their colors. It also is very pretty and bright! I will take a photo of that one before it leaves....(i hope i remember!)

Stitching Leis

I have a few books on making leis, and one of the ones I use is one by coryn tanaka and may masaki. They have a few books on making Ribbon Leis and also crocheting leis using yarns and ribbons. I have Grosgrain ribbon and the Picot satin ribbon together, and you use a running stitch to make the leis.
This one is for a girl who is graduating from Milikan High School in Long Beach, CA

This one is for a girl who is graduating from CSU Dominguez

I think it comes out really stunning, and will look amazing on their robes for graduation!

Inside LisCat

LisCat opened up in March, but this is my second day going to the shop (since FRIDAY....April 25)...!!! It is a flurry of bright colors, shelves filled with bright lovely shades of yarn and bright purses, bags and more goodies! The Chairs have knitted covers on top, in bright colors of yarn which add to the coziness of the shop! It greets you with so much warmth and comfort that you want to sit and knit! This is the main table in the center of the shop, and to the left of the store in the 'back' area, there are couches for knitting, looking through magazines, and even sneaking lunch!

I didn't want to take a picture of it since there were 2 ladies eating back there...lol

Below is my yarn...yes, it is knitted. It is from a company called FLAT FEET which I had a link in the blog post earlier....It is knitted and then dyed...and you unravel it to knit whatever you like!

I am making an attempt at knitting socks..so I came to the store already in this condition. I was ready to start the heel. I thought I might as well get to the point where I didn't know where to go....I had a pattern, but I got another one, and I think it is easier. I am making anklets, so with this 'skein', I should be able to make 2 pairs....isn't that cool? Karen and I might trade off so I can have a pair of my yarn, and one of hers too......

I came in with this much, and worked the back of the heel. (I didn't take a photo yet). After I got to the end of the heel, I now need to go back to the shop to get more instructions. I have to pick up the sides of the heel and then read the pattern....(I did it at home, but ....gee..without someone to really show you how to go from that point...how do you learn??)

This is Karen's piece, and she's always wearing Pink..(almost always..) so it fits that she would have socks to match it!

Busy working in the shop, ....you can see how lovely the chairs are, and the bright array of colors...

Karen's piece after our first class ....

Closer up....below

Go Visit the shop!!
It also has a Seamstress in it, as well as a Flower shop!
and don't forget about the Used Book shop across the street...!

Alisons Ankle Socks

Today, I went to LIS CAT's Yarn shop! They were in Long Beach on 2nd Street in Naples, and then closed down for a short time, but re-opened last month...(have not been keeping up with them)...after a long period of almost 8 months of being closed! I love their new place! It is quite large and roomy, and finally looks like a FULL FLEDGED Knitting shop! They are in the Village area, near Bellflower and Carson St, near Cirvellos and Once Read Books (a great used book store, if you haven't ever tried a 2nd hand book store, you gotta check them out!)

LisCat
5423 Village Rd Long Beach 90808 562-627-YARN

I am going to be taking a sock class...and in the meantime, this is something I would like to knit..anklets... :)
I got FLAT FEET yarn which is a new funky style hand dyed yarn, which is knitted flat and then dyed. You unravel it to knit, and it will create it's new pattern as you knit! There are other things you can knit, but know that the yarn will be different in each section as you knit!
Karen and I will be 'starting' it on Monday...so after I go to the gym (*heh heh) I will go to my 'class'!

happy sock knitting!alison's ankle socks (and short-row tutorial)

Lightweight, ankle socks with or without pom poms. Summer fun for your feet!Since I don't really like using fingering weight on teeny tiny needles, this pattern is written at a slightly larger gauge to be knit on US3's. I think that's as large as I could go for ankle socks meant to be worn in warmer weather. I wanted these socks to be snug and hug your feet (who needs extra bulk in their shoe in the summer??), so I've chosen to use short-rows on the heel. Be sure to check out the links below for details on exactly how to work the backwards yarnovers and wraps needed to make short rows. If you haven't done short-row heels and toes before, this is a great time to try it out!![MC]: 1 skein Rowan Cashsoft 4ply in white (approx 175m of similar weight yarn, like Koigu or Rowan 4ply soft)[CC]: 1 skein Rowan Cashsoft 4ply in green (small amount of similar weight yarn will do)1 skein Koigu color #200Sizing/Yardage Info: This was plenty of yarn to make anklets for my feet, which are about average width for a woman's foot and 10 inches long. You should be able to make your socks shorter and wider and still have enough yarn.Gauge: 26 st/ 4in.Needles: 3.25mm / US3
Instructions:Cast on 52st. (This is how many stitches I'm thinking an average woman's foot needs. If you've got a wider foot or want to adjust this for a child's size, you can increase or decrease this number. A multiple of four would be good, so your ribbing will work out. The heels and toes are done over half of the stitches, so you can adjust that number easily.) Work in 2x2 rib for 3 rounds. If you want a true footie style sock, begin heel here. If you'd like an ankle sock, work a few rounds of stockinette stitch (knit every round) before beginning the heel. (In the pom pom socks above, I worked 8 rounds. For the Koigu sock, I worked 3.) Before beginning the heel, I would recommend redistributing your stitches so that you have 13 stitches on each of four needles.
To make the heel, you'll be working on the next 26 stitches only using your preferred method of short-rowing (such as the traditional wrap and turn method, described here, or Priscilla Gibson-Roberts' yarn-over method, described here). I like PG-R's method, so this pattern is written as a sort of tutorial in that method, but if you're using the wrap method, just substitute all the "turn and work backwards yarnover" with "wrap next stitch and turn" and see Wendy's tutorial (link above) for step by step instructions and pictures.
Begin heel by knitting across next 25 sts. Turn and work backward yarnover. Purl across next row until only one stitch remains on the left needle and turn and work backward yarnover again. Knit across next row up to (not including) the first stitch with yarnover, then turn and work backwards yarnover. Continue in this manner, working one less stitch each row, always working a backwards yarnover after turning, until only 8 stitches remain without yarnovers. click for the entire picture tutorial
With RS facing, knit to the first stitch with a yarnover. Knit the stitch normally, correct the twist in the yarnover and knit the yarnover together with the next stitch. By connecting the yarnover with the following stitch, you're closing up any gap made by doing a short row. Turn and work backwards yarnover (yes, now there are two yarnovers right next to each other). Purl across WS to first stitch with yarnover. Purl that stitch normally, then purl it's yarnover together with the following stitch. (When working stitches together on the WS, I prefer to slip stitches knitwise onto right needle, move them in this position back to left needle and purl them together through the back loops. I think it gives them a cleaner look. Thanks to Michelle for this tip!) Turn and work backwards yarnover. click for the entire picture tutorial
*Knit to first stitch with yarnover. Knit that stitch normally, then correct the twist in the following two yarnovers and knit them together with the next stitch. (Yup, that's a knit 3 together!) Turn and work backwards yarnover. Purl to first stitch with yarnover and purl it normally. Purl the following 2 yarnovers together with the next stitch through the back loop. Turn and work backwards yarnover.* Repeat from * to * until all stitches have been reincorporated into the heel. You're almost there! click for the entire picture tutorial
Once you finish the last RS row of the heel, begin knitting in the round again. You can knit the last yarnover on the RS together with the first stitch on the next needle. Then when you have almost finished the instep stitches, knit the last remaining yarnover (it's still on your needle with your heel stitches) together with the last stitch of the instep. This will help close up any holes in that area. Keep knitting around to about two inches less than desired foot length.
Work the toe just like the heel, doing short-rows over the same 26 stitches that you worked for the heel. When you are done with the toe, you can rearrange all the toe stitches on one needle and all the instep stitches on another and kitchener stitch them together.
Finishing:- for pom pom socks:With a crochet hook and [CC], add a single crochet edging to the sock. Begin at the back of the heel, *take hook into bottom row of first purl rib and make a single crochet stitch. Next take hook into top row (by cast on edge) of knit rib, directly between the two knit stitches, and make a single crochet stitch.* Repeat from * to * around the entire cuff. Be careful not to make the crochet edge too tight as it will make it difficult to get the sock on. Make a one inch pom pom with [CC] and secure to back heel.
- for both socks:Weave in all ends. Make second sock and have the cutest feet on the block!
Pattern was from Alison's Socks

Stitch n Pitch and other things....

This is Nini or NamiNori (surfer girl). My cross eyed black faced booger...she's an sweet tub of cat...she outweighs Stitch, my Bubba boy...she's a tub of fat kat!

OH, and she's the one that will grab a ball of yarn and proceed to RE-Decorate ANY room with lovely shades of expensive (or inexpensive) yarn...she loves to drag it all over the house, and ...hmmmm......where is she now???

One of these days, ......one of these days...!!!

Stitch n Pitch is coming up....and of course, wouldn't you know it...when I decide to finally post about it, ...the WEBSITE IS DOWN!!

but, I did find some great blogs..and this one is the funniest!

I love her entry that she's divorced and 4 cats...isn't that my life too? (except, I have 2 dogs right now...anyone want a wonderful red Golden Retriever?).....my yellow Golden is my stupid dog, so you can't have him, but the female is available! lol.....

I think I might just have to go this year! Wouldn't it be fun to go and sit and knit, eat Dodger Dogs, and of course, watch Dodger Baseball...!!! Too bad they don't do it for the Angels....!

as soon as the stitch n pitch site is available, I can post more about that!!!

Favorites on Etsy - not made by me, but you gotta check it out!!!
